Ms. Sweeney meets with the Governor

by Cindy Bowers

May 27, 2008

Principal Pat Sweeney had the privilege to speak to Governor Dave Heineman about the future of state assessments.  Ms. Sweeney shared her thoughts about how a state test could possibly be administered in a similar process as Randolph is currently using which is a computer based system.  The immediate feedback of a computer based system has become an enormous benefit to the standards and assessment process. She also mentioned that allowing the assessments to be given in segments throughout the school year, would allow the teachers to teach- assess and re-teach if necessary.  Allowing the experts of our education system, Nebraska teachers, to have input on the assessment was also a request.

Governor Heineman was interested in hearing about Randolph's required courses, student success history and what the area administrators are needing at this time.  Ms. Sweeney answered the latter question with, "A direction.  We are wrapping up a successful year and planning for August.  We would like to know what is expected of us as a district and how we can continue to have Randolph Public Schools progress."

Mr. Heinemann said that the new state mandates for assessments was passed at the end of the legislative session and with the retirement of the Commissioner, a thought out plan is needed.  He stated it this way, "We need to do this right for the sake of the children of Nebraska."  He mentioned that several Fortune 500 companies visit his office and one of the first questions they ask is in regards to the education system.  He states that it is great and has a hard time gathering the information to back up his comment.

Overall, the meeting with Governor Heinemann was informative and enlightening.
