ELEMENTARY MEDIA CENTER CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Kindergarten:
Literacy skills presented to the students will be: book care, book parts, library etiquette, authors of children’s books, Golden Sower, plot, and main characters.
First Grade:
Literacy skills presented to the students will be: book care, book parts including covers, title page, indexes, library etiquette, authors of children’s books, Golden Sower, plot, main characters, setting, fiction and nonfiction books.
Second Grade:
Literacy skills presented to the students will be: book care, book parts including covers, title page, indexes, table of content, library etiquette, authors of children’s books, Golden Sower, plot, main characters, setting, fiction and nonfiction books, and an introduction to dictionaries.
Third Grade:
Literacy skills presented to the students will be: book care, book parts including covers, title page, indexes, table of content, library etiquette, authors of children’s books, Golden Sower, problems and solution, fiction and nonfiction books, dictionaries, the Dewey Decimal System and the automated lookup system.
Presentation of the atlas and possibly the gazetteer or geography dictionary will be covered with an emphasis on alphabetical order. Every map needs a title, date, compass rose, scale of miles and map key. Map keys are developed. Longitude and latitude, prime meridian, equator and hemispheres are skills that are developed.
The telephone book will be presented. Alphabetical order as to the towns and list of names is stressed. The 3 parts of the phone number is demonstrated. The yellow pages and categories will be covered .
Fourth
Grade:
Literacy skills presented to the students will be: book care, book parts including covers, title page, indexes, table of content, library etiquette, authors of children’s books, Golden Sower, problems and solution, fiction and nonfiction books, dictionaries, the Dewey Decimal System and the automated lookup system.
The dictionary will be presented in 4th grade at length. Students are encouraged to understand all parts of the entry such as entry word, pronunciation, part of speech, origin and definitions. The use of guide words and pronunciation key will be emphasized.
The thesaurus will be presented. Students will learn that a thesaurus will help them find a better word, not to over use a word or the word that best say what they want to say.
The “World Almanac,” a book of facts will be presented to fourth grade. They learn the 3 indexes, how to read an index as well as reading charts and tables.
Fifth Grade:
Literacy skills presented to the students will be: book care, library etiquette, authors of children’s books, Golden Sower, problems and solution, fiction and nonfiction books, dictionaries, the Dewey Decimal System and the automated lookup system.
The 5th grade students will explore the encyclopedia, it’s full circle of knowledge, compare it to a dictionary, topics and subtopics, cross references, and the main volume, the index.
Fifth grade students identify different types of genera and their characteristics.
Sixth Grade:
Literacy skills presented to the students will be the automated lookup system, Boolean searches, various types of reference books, various types and forms of literature, Nebraskaccess and the Library of Congress.
The students will spend a lot of time with Nebraskaccess because of its wealth of information. Students will examine its holdings of magazines and accessing articles. Projects are done with the vast list of biographies. The genealogy database is always fun for the students as well as the photographs in Nebraska Memories. Books In Print and the Fiction Connection are fun. The students spend time with the web sites and discover the advantage of using a narrowed database rather than Google.
The students will be introduced to the Library of Congress and its holdings. They will examine the American Memories, the Jefferson tab for legislative information and access the online library.

Other topics will be added on an as need basis.
