8th Grade Visits Planetarium

Andrew Schnoor

May 20, 2013

Each year, the 8th grade Earth Science class takes a field trip to visit the planetarium at Wayne State College, the students are asked to write articles about this trip after they return.  Here is a selected response. - Mr. Engel

On Monday, May 13, the 8th grade class took a trip to Wayne, NE.  We went to the planetarium.  When we got there, we met up with Dr. Young, Mr. Engel's college Physics professor.  He took us into this small, strange, dome-like room.  The top half of the dome was lit up.  He talked for a little bit, then started the show.  He flipped a lever and the dome went to a picture of the day sky showing all the visible stars.  We were all shocked because he took away the atmosphere so we could see stars in daytime.  A little bit later, he showed us the moon.  It was like an IMAX theater and all of a sudden, the moon kept getting bigger and bigger.  Everyone was amazed because it felt like we were getting closer to the moon.  Dr. Young showed us everything.  He showed all about other galaxies, the Sun, moons, and much more.  It was everyone's first time in the planetarium, except for Mr. E.  It was a great experience for everyone and everybody had a great time.
