JV Boys Complete Excellent Season

February 24, 2016

The Randolph Junior Varsity Boys' Basketball team ended their season on a high note.  Randolph took on the visiting Hartington/Newcastle Wildcats in a Lewis and Clark Conference matchup.  The Cardinals  jumped out to a quick 12-3 advantage in the 1st quarter and cruised to a 26-13 victory in the 2 quarter contest.

Randolph had balanced scoring on the night with Mason Nordhues leading the way with 8 points. Merrix Denn add 7 points, Jud Hixson had 6 and Cade Linville chipped in 5 points to round out the scoring.

The victory improved the JV's record to 14-7  on the season.  The final record was quite a turnaround from the 1-3 mark the Cardinals had to start the season.  The Cards went 13-4 down the stretch with a 1st place finish in the Plainview tournament, and a 2nd place finish in the R-Club tournament.

Senior Axel Alvarez returned to the squad this year. It was a joy to have Axel on the team. He is a great kid. I enjoyed having him back out for his senior year.

Juniors Andrew Schnoor and Cade Linville were important leaders for the team.  Andrew has earned much playing time at the varsity level.  His ball handling skills and sharp shooting will be on display next year at the varsity level.  Cade was also a sharp shooter.  Linville made 14 3 point shots on the season.

Sophomores on the squad were Mason Nordhues and Judson Hixson.  Lack of players forced Mason to be an iron man this year.  Mason rarely came out of the game and often showed his versatility by playing both inside and outside when needed. His versatility was a key to our season.  Judson, despite having his father/coach yelling in his ear all time, had a great year.  His rebounding and scoring presence inside really helped the team.

The three Freshmen were key components on the season.  The addition to Merrix Denn was a pleasant surprise.  Merrix fit right in with the boys and took off.  Merrix nine times was the leading scorer on the squad, including 19 and 20 point outbursts on 2 occasions.  We look for exceptional things out of Merrix; with continued improvement on defense and ball handling, he could develop into an exceptional basketball player.  John Munter and Avery Bermel were the other two Freshmen on team.  Without a doubt, these two players by far have made the most improvement on the team.  If the pair continue to work hard we should see great things in their future.

I would like to thank the parents and fans for their support.  Randolph has always shown great support for the school's activities, it is just one of the things that make this a great place to live and work.  I would most like to thank the players for their time and effort this season.  They make the long hours and long road trips on a bus well worth it.  We all need to be proud of the remarkable kids we have RHS.

Jim Hixson
