The MARCHING BAND

by Mary Hahne

September 09, 2009

The Marching Band is working to defend their 1st place ranking at the Lion’s Club parade in Norfolk on September 26th. The Parade starts at 10:00 AM. The parade route starts on 4th street by the Norfolk High School and turns toward 5th street ending by Norfolk Senior High School. This year the band will perform a new song El Campeon(The Champion). This piece is difficult because it has a ¾ section in the middle which poses as a marching challenge for staying on the left foot. Students are learning the music and doing very well marching. This is a testament to the talent in the 7-12 marching band. The music portion is also coming along with dynamics, accents, balance, and blend. One should hear a solid performance from the 2009 marching band.
New this year, Amber G. and Tiffany G. are teaching and challenging the flag corps with a more difficult routine. Mrs. Hahne was impressed. Within 2 weeks of receiving the music, Amber and Tiffany composed the flag routine, recruited members, and taught the routine to the flag corps. We are looking forward to the flag corps to be a huge asset to the marching band with their new technique and skills. The flag corps members practicing this summer were Kristina B., Danielle B., Kaylie P., Kim B., and Lesley H.. We are working to build larger group. If any students are interested in joining the team, please see Mrs. Hahne.
Brandi S. will be our drum Major again this year. She took home the Marching Band award for her leadership and willingness to help others in marching band. Leading the group with a positive attitude and great work ethic, the band and Brandi worked as a team to take home the trophy last year.
Banner Carriers this year will be Maggie C., Amber D., and Megan F., the 3 top performers in the 6th Grade. The student’s earn the privilege to march in front of the band in the Norfolk parade by passing pages in their lesson book throughout the 5th grade year. These three are the farthest, but what a challenge. The 6th grade is an amazing group of musicians surpassing many in their achievement level through the books. The spring concert was evidence of the talent shared through-out the grade.
